About Us

Overall sponsorship of Dictionary Project Kansas City is provided by Reading Reaches, Inc. This not-for-profit, based in Kansas City Mo., is involved with children's literacy programs. (More information about Reading Reaches, Inc. is available at www.ReadingReaches.org).

The project is also sponsored in part by the Truman Heartland Community Foundation, based in Independence, Mo. The Foundation serves the philanthropic community of Kansas City and eastern Jackson County.

Dictionary Project Kansas City is overseen by an advisory board of five members who are interested in improving the education of the children in our community. These people believe that they can make a difference in our communities by working with other community leaders to improve children's lives. Board members serve without pay

Board Members

Christopher Hope, executive director, founded of Reading Reaches Kids' Minds and Kids' Hearts, a program to introduce the joys of reading to children who live in domestic-violence shelters, in the mid 1990s.  In 2002, the organization was renamed, Reading Reaches, Inc., as it grew to encompass additional programs that were concerned with children's literacy in the community.  His many volunteer projects revolve around literacy, children, preventing domestic violence and aviation.

Linda Fewell has worked in communications at Hallmark Cards for more than 20 years. A former teacher of high school speech, drama and English, she also appears from time to time as a broadcast and stage performer. She volunteers in public schools and for the United Way of Greater Kansas City.

Bill Kalahurka is a partner in the Development Foundation, a not-for-profit fund-raising consulting group that assists churches and small not-for-profits with capital campaigns. Recently, he also was host and narrator of KSHB Channel 41's Emmy Award-winning "Kansas City Crossroads." His lifelong interest in history and the arts is reflected in his volunteer pursuits.

Renee VanErp is Director of External Affairs, University of Kansas School of Medicine. She is a former English teacher who wrote and produced the award-winning "Crossroads" series for KSHB Channel 41 in Kansas City. She volunteers for the American Cancer Society.

Rebbecca Lake Wood is an attorney who practiced in the Kansas City area for 17 years before entering public service as the public guardian for Jackson County, Mo. She is an officer in Reading Reaches, Inc. and is active in the St. Paul's Episcopal Family Literacy Project.
